NSEP 2026: Eligibility, Syllabus & Exam Pattern

The National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP 2026) is the prestigious first stage of selection for the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in India. Organized by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT), the NSEP exam identifies the brightest young physics minds across the country. Preparing for NSEP requires an in-depth conceptual grasp and systematic problem-solving rigor.

Who is Eligible for NSEP 2026?

  • Age Limit: Must have been born between July 1, 2007, and June 30, 2012 (both days inclusive, for the 2026–2027 Olympiad cycle).
  • Class of Study: Must be studying in Class 10, Class 11, or Class 12 as of November 30, 2026. Students who have completed or passed Class 12 before November 30, 2026, are NOT eligible.
  • Citizenship: Must be eligible to hold an Indian passport.
  • Subject Restriction: A student appearing for NSEP cannot simultaneously appear for other NSE examinations (NSEC, NSEB, NSEA) or NSEJS in the same session.

NSEP 2026 Exam Pattern & Marking Scheme

Total Marks: 216 Marks  |  Total Questions: 60  |  Duration: 2 Hours (8:30 AM – 10:30 AM)

Part A1 (48 Questions): Single option correct MCQs. +3 Marks for correct answer, -1 Mark penalty for incorrect response.

Part A2 (12 Questions): One or more than one option correct MCQs. +6 Marks only if all correct options are marked, with no negative marking.

NSEP Syllabus

The syllabus broadly covers standard Class 11 and 12 Physics (CBSE/State Boards), but questions demand much higher Olympiad-level analytical depth. Major areas include Classical Mechanics, Thermodynamics & Fluid Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Wave Optics, and Modern Physics.
